Have you ever heard anyone say “It’s all about location?” Animal Planet is running a new series about the Bronx Zoo. The series premiered on Saturday, February 18, 2017. I saw the trailer, and the location reference is 10 miles from Times Square.
The Bronx Zoo is a 265-acre animal sanctuary located at 2300 Southern Blvd., Bronx NY. It is the largest zoo in the continental United States and one of the largest in the world. The zoo opened to the public in November of 1899. As of 2010, the Bronx Zoo had 650 different species that totaled over 4,000 animals.
The series titled “The Zoo” is an 8-month project that takes viewers behind the scenes of the park to see how the staff cares for and feeds the animals. According to the Animal Planet website, the series will cover all sorts of cases and animals. New shows air on Saturday nights at 10pm Eastern Time, and are 60 minutes long. The first episode featured a silver-back gorilla diagnosed with glaucoma.
It’s funny (not funny haha) that all of the articles and trailers for the show reference the zoo as being 10 miles from Times Square in Manhattan. Would it really hurt the ratings if they mentioned the Bronx Zoo was actually in the middle of the Bronx? Could they mention that Bronx is one of five boroughs that make up the city of New York?
It is actually less than a mile and a half northwest of the Metropolitan Oval in the Parkchester community. Parkchester is a 129-acre community in the southeast section of the Bronx. Comparatively, it would take 43 minutes to get to the zoo from Times Square by car or 59 minutes by bus. From the Metropolitan Oval, you can get to the zoo in as little as 10 minutes by car, 18 minutes by bus, and if you walk fast, you can get there in less than 30 minutes.
Next time you head over to the zoo, take a bit of time and look around the neighborhood. There are a lot of new Bronx NYC rentals that just may pique your interest.
